Thanks for this. What little I've read of Chrysostom I've found practical and helpful. I was not aware of the bones of "propitiatory works" to spit out.

Thanks particularly for the application (28:34 to the end). I was waiting for that and was glad it was there. It's hard for me to agree with Chrysostom's calling his friend's decision spiritual adultery, but he was closer to the situation and maybe he was right in the case of his friend.

But the zeal, the willingness to do battle for his friend's soul -- we need more of that, not less.

Thanks for listening and taking the time to comment.

Chrysostom lived in a different world and they approached the flesh in a much more physical way than we reformed intellectuals are used to doing. Yes, it appears Col. 2:21 wasn't a favorite text, but there are certainly some good take-aways. What you say was the most convicting for me too...cynicism hadn't driven out his zeal for his friend's soul.
